Beads can be found on clothing, lamp shades, coasters, shoes, tassels, purses, napkins, belts, hats, pillows, cards, and jewelry—and this is the short list. Every month a new catalog arrives with something else made from beads or using beads as embellishment. Of course I want one of each! Beads are popular—it’s a fact—and we’re living in a time when our choices are many. The beads used throughout this book are mainly seed beads of different sizes, shapes, and color. A few of the projects do use larger trim beads, but usually as embellishment only.

Each manufacturer’s 11/0 seed beads are of a different size, so this is approximate. All of the beads weighed in this list were from one manufacturer, and they were all opaque black. How Many Beads Per Gram? Figure 2. Slip knot Square Knot. The square knot is one of the easiest knots to tie, because it’s simply two overhand knots. Be careful when doing the second half of the knot, or it can go wrong and turn into a granny knot. An easy-to-remember rule is if you make the first knot with an overhand loop, the second knot should also use an overhand loop.

When this happens, try putting a supporting form (such as a straw, a dowel, or whatever fits) in the center of the joined ring of beads. Tape the tail thread to the form to hold the ring in place, and stitch the next couple of rows on the form to keep the beads in their proper positions.
