The rights and obligations formerly attributed to the Seignior were transferred to the Crown. In 1783, the need to re-settle Loyalists along the banks of the St. Lawrence necessitated the expansion of the Crown's seigniorial obligations. In particular, the settlers would require the use of both a saw mill for cutting lumber and a grist mill for grinding flour.
