This is a manifestation of the general problem in AI of defining ‘intelligence’ that has led to much discussion. The result is that there are as many agent definitions as there are researchers, leading to the term being substantially overused. Some examples are: ● ● ● ● ● ● Brustoloni (1991) ‘Autonomous agents are systems capable of autonomous, purposeful action in the real world’. Smith et al. (1994) ‘Let us define an agent as a persistent software entity dedicated to a specific purpose. “Persistent” distinguishes agents from subroutines; agents have their own ideas about how to accomplish tasks, their own agendas.

They claimed that there are some agents possible, which do not fall into the category of IAs at all. Such agents would possess a true ‘intelligence’, as opposed to IAs, which in fact only perform smart actions. SAs would therefore be a next generation of agents, qualitatively different from the ones existing nowadays. It is interesting to note that possibly such agents would require completely new computing paradigms. For example, Cottam et al. (2003) mention quantum effects as a possible missing link to build SAs.

Under such circumstances, notions of ‘optimal’ behaviour are replaced by notions of ‘robust’ behaviour. The key difference is the ability to cope with unanticipated events in a plausible way rather than ‘crash’ because of a locally optimal but brittle control program. One approach to this problem that has proven to be successful is to use EC techniques to evolve via simulation robust control programs and then insert these evolved programs into actual problem-solving agents. We describe this approach in more detail in this section.
