The primary movement from right to left is bracketed by a counterpoint of movements curving into space; the bend of the road away motion. With arms folded as he glides, the skater evokes an allegorical image of Winter as one of the Four Seasons, arms buried in a muffler, hugging his body against the cold.

The painting had been intentionally framed in a door jamb and a step had been built out from the base of the picture to the floor, continuing the painted staircase on which the illusion of a dropped ticket of admission to the Columbianum had been painted out into the room itself. As Washington passed the picture, according to Rembrandt, he turned to it and doffed his hat, making a pohte httle bow to the painted image. The "deception" was a success!
