In the crater’s rough cinder terrain, the budding young naturalist would probably have made a point of searching out the celebrated silversword. This six-foot-tall, silver-leafed plant blooms just once during its 20-year life span, sprouting an enormous stalk of red-purple flowers before wilting and shriveling into a brittle gray skeleton. Extremely rare, the plant grows virtually no place else in the world except on Haleakala’s bowl-shaped summit. On her excursions up Haleakala, Annie would also have likely encountered another famous resident of the volcano: the Hawaiian goose, or nene.

Soon, the enterprising missionaries’ sons had acquired a steamship line to transport their raw sugar the approximately 2,000 miles from Maui to San Francisco and had established their first sugar refinery in the northern California town of Crockett, where the wellknown C & H (Californian and Hawaiian) brand of table sugar is still produced today.
